Privacy Policy
Last updated October 9, 2026. Written in plain language, in line with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
1. The short version
To give you an account that works on any device, we store your account details, the background information you give us at signup, and your study activity on secure servers run by our service providers. We use it only to run and improve AFK Prep. We never sell it, we don't show ads, and we don't use advertising or analytics trackers. You can download your information, correct it, or delete your account at any time from your Profile.
2. Accountability
AFK Prep is responsible for the personal information under its control. If you have questions about this policy or how your information is handled, reach us through the Contact us page.
3. What we collect
- Account details — your first and last name, email address, and password. Your password is stored only as a secure hash by our authentication provider; we can't see it.
- Address and background — your postal address (street, city, province or state, postal code and country), the country where you studied dentistry, your year of graduation, whether you're a general dentist, specialist, or PhD holder (and your specialty or field), and whether and how many times you've taken the AFK before.
- Study plan — your exam date, study days, daily study time, preparation stage, and chosen subjects.
- Study activity — segments read, quiz and practice-test results, wrong and flagged questions, flagged segments, notes, highlights, personal summaries, and diagram annotations.
- Preferences — reminder and read-aloud settings.
- Messages and reports — anything you send through the contact form or a “Report content” form.
- Account security records — for each login, your IP address, device and browser type, and approximate location (city, region and country, worked out from the IP address); which device is currently signed in to your account; and, on study material (lessons, quizzes and mocks), any detected screenshot, screen-recording or print attempt, with its time, page and browser type.
- Your consent record — the date and time you agreed to this policy, the Terms of Use and the account rules.
We don't collect government identifiers, health information, or payment card details. AFK Prep doesn't currently take payments; if that changes, payments will be handled by a dedicated payment processor and we'll update this policy first.
4. Why we collect it
- To run your account — signing you in and keeping your progress in sync across devices.
- To personalize your preparation — building your study plan, recommending reading times, and deciding what you should review next.
- To understand and improve AFK Prep — your background information helps us understand who our learners are (for example, which countries they trained in and how many are resitting the exam) so we can prioritize the right content. We look at this in aggregate, not to single anyone out.
- To support you — answering your messages and fixing content you report.
- To protect your account and our content — the account security records let us keep each account to one person on one device at a time, notice signs that an account is shared or that content is being copied, and enforce the Terms of Use. Study material is also watermarked with your name and email for the same reason. These measures are a condition of using AFK Prep, so they can't be switched off for an individual account.
We won't use your information for any other purpose without asking you first.
5. Where your information is stored
Your information is stored in our database, run by our infrastructure provider (Supabase), which also handles sign-in. Its servers may be located outside Canada, so your information may be subject to the laws of those countries. We choose providers that protect information to a standard comparable to ours, and they may only use it to provide their service to us.
The app also keeps a working copy of your study data in your browser's local storage, so it stays fast and keeps working through a brief loss of connection. That copy is refreshed from our servers when you sign in, and cleared when you delete your account.
If you turn on the optional “Natural voice” read-aloud option, the text you ask it to read is sent to our own server, converted to audio by an open-source voice model we run ourselves, and discarded immediately. It is not logged or stored, and it's never sent to a third party. The default read-aloud voice runs entirely in your browser.
6. Cookies
We use only the cookies needed to keep you signed in. We don't use advertising, tracking, or analytics cookies.
7. Consent
You agree to this policy when you create your account. You can withdraw your consent at any time by deleting your account (see section 11). If we ever want to use your information for a new purpose, we'll ask you first.
8. Sharing
We don't sell, rent, or trade your personal information, and we don't share it with advertisers or data brokers. We share it only with the service providers who host and run AFK Prep for us, as described above, or when the law requires us to.
9. Retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is open. When you delete your account, your account, background information, study plan, and study activity are permanently removed from our database right away. Copies may remain in our provider's encrypted backups for a limited period until those backups are overwritten. Account security records are kept for 12 months and then deleted, or deleted with your account if that comes first — unless we need one longer to deal with a breach of the Terms of Use. Messages and content reports you've sent us are kept for as long as we need them to handle them, and are no longer linked to your account.
10. Safeguards
Information is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and protected by access controls in our database, so each account can read and change only its own data. Only a small number of authorized AFK Prep administrators can access account information, and only to run the service and support learners. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we'll notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada as required by law.
11. Your rights: access, correction, and deletion
You can do the following at any time from your Profile page:
- Download your data — a copy of your account details, background information, and the notes you've written, as a JSON file.
- Correct your data — edit your name, email, background information, and study plan directly. Notes, summaries, and highlights can be edited or deleted wherever they appear.
- Delete your account — permanently erases your account and everything associated with it. This can't be undone.
To get a copy of any other information we hold about you, such as your full study history, contact us through the Contact us page. We'll respond within 30 days.
12. Age
AFK Prep is intended for qualified dentists and requires you to be at least 18 years old.
13. Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your information, we'll update this page and its date. If a change is significant, we'll let you know in the app before it takes effect.
14. Questions or complaints
If you believe your personal information has been handled improperly, contact us first via the Contact us page so we can fix it. You can also contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at any time.
